Just locked up for an hour and went up to the camp to see the Vulcan take off and do some circuits.

When I was at Primary School we had to stop lessons as they all took off - no way of hearing anything.

What a mighty impressive beast.

Oooops!

Left the camera in the studio!

D'oh!!! Roll Eyes

Where is it operating from? Would love to see it again, one of the few jet aircraft that excites me.

About 12 miles from you!!

It's been in to Cottesmore for final checks to ensure it meets modern safety standards, but flew out at 2 today after a few circuits - not sure how much longer before it's on official display.

ah, the memories.     Long ago I was based at RAF Waddington when Vulcan was in its last days of service and got the chance to fly in one (XL426).   All sounds good until once inside the sixth seat was waaaay below the windows so only sky was visible, and afterwards I saw there were plates spot welded over cracks in the airframe.     Still a fantastic experience tho'

Heard it's going to be at Leuchars Airshow this year, can remember sitting in the garden when I were a little kid, went dark, looked up and there was a vulcan going over, impressive sight

It's operating out of Bruntingthorpe, civilian fund raising team, ex-RAF crew, (I know the navigator), and are awaiting CAA clearance to attend the shows this year.  Undercarriage door jammed open on Wednesday so they couldn't complete the three hour test flight.

I remember being on the airfield at Marham when they used to practice the display, the feeling when they stood her on her tail on full re-heat...

She's booked for Waddington and Lowestoft later this year.

Not just a plane, one of the most significant aircraft of the cold war era. They pulled one out of retirement to bomb the runway at Port Stanley during the Falklands war. I guess you are too young to remember that  Grin
Last time I photographed one was at North Weald fighter meet around 1988,  as it took off and went near vertical the vibration set off just about every car alarm on the field.
An awesome machine, although my main passion is for the pre jet era.

Not quite.    Operation Black Buck (the bombing of Stanley) was in 1982, and the Vulcan remained in Service at Waddington until spring of 1984 with 55 squadron.   I think that 6 were in service until the very end, but my memory is now clouded with the mists of time.

I have 3 notable memories of the Vulcan displays:

1. On one occassion I was near a bunch of Americans and they watched in awe as it did it's trademark 'stand on its tail and do a vertical accent' They all thought that it was a fighter. When I told them that it was a heavy bomber they were completely dumbstruck.

2. I watched XH558 do it's last display at Cranfield in Bedfordshire and actually sheltered under it's wing, along with several hundred others, during a heavy shower. That was 20th Sept 1992

3. My brother and I drove to Bruntingthorpe to watch its arrival there to be de-commissioned. The date I have on the photos of that day is May 2nd 1993

Now if only they can get one of the Lightnings flying again we will have a real draw to the air shows.
