Butlins??? Are they still around?

Reckon so mate.

But I guess the days of backward running competitions and everyone being happy to afford their first working class holiday since returning from WW11 have probably changed.

We did have alternate destinations - caravans at Yarmouth, the area now being derelict but plans to build.

We got there by steam train as I clearly recall.

Which reminds me someone is booked for a wedding on a rail carriage in August with a trip up and down the line too. That'll be a nice change.

So - on my website - if the words "multiple award winner" are not directly linked to the word "photographer"...... Roll Eyes

I have some (I think) fascinating pictures of the era taken by pros who used to patroll around taking pictures, handing out a card, then you had to go and look at them and buy them.

Things like mum being dragged along in a sack by dad in a race. They absoultely date the era both by the activities and by hair/fashion.

The black and white images are superb, with no change to them that I can detect over the years so very well fixed and washed compared to most snaps that you would buy on that basis.

Alternatively I really should do something with Dad's WW11 images including flying over Dresden after the carpet bombing.

Butlins at Clacton went years ago didn't it? I remember it had one of those pools where you could swim underwater and look at the diners in the cafe - and they could leer back, whilst puffing away on their No6 and supping their Double Diamonds.

If you want to see some great images from Butlins check 'Our True Intent is Your Delight' by John Hinde Photographers, who were commissioned to shoot the 'pleasure parks' in all their heyday. Shot on Ektachrome, the plates are fascinating.

I remember as a seventeen year old going to the one in Wales, What a drive, before the motorways. I had fun, it's the sort of thing my kids will probably never know.... they've been too Americanized
