Just been called up for Jury service, third time - I thought 2 was the limit. Not even local but The Old Bailey! Hated it before so I am not happy, I understand you can defer but it might come through at a worse time. This is Nov 7th, I have a wedding on 5th so would be processing some of the week, not sure what I can claim as self-employed have to prove the income they have lost, just wondered if anyone had any experience please? Cheers Lesley

Being on the witness protection program {every Thur 2230 hrs } or rather having been a witness you can claim all travel and subsistence < time limit applies > and if you or your accountant submit a claim for loss of income it has to be done on headed paper. That may include any cost of sub-contracting the work to a third party to meet a deadline, such as the due date for a proof of the photos for an album. Having said that you live outwith the area of jurisdiction of Scottish Law, so your best bet is to contact a clerk to the court at any crown court.

Hiya I have just finished 3 weeks of jury service and two days later received notification of expenses that have been paid. They have paid for lunch (up to £5) petrol and parking and as I am self employed they had to look at my last tax return to see how much they could pay me (up to £60 odd per day) If you have served within 5 years you can refuse. If you havent served before then you are allowed to defer to a later date once, then you must do it. I was called in the middle of July when Ihad some midweek weddings on so deferred to the end of August when I didnt have any on. Portraits i did in the evening after jury service! As you have been called for the third time you have a very good case to refuse. hth

Many thanks, I will speak to them to see if I can get out of it as it's the third time, if not I am going to defer until January. I do my own small tax return so they will take that which is helpful. It is like a black cloud hanging over me, it will not be small cases like shoplifting at the Old Bailey probably some gruesome murder or a complicated fraud that I won't understand! Thanks again Lesley

There's nothing complicated about politicians claiming for a Duck Dwelling . . . . off with his head

I would love to do jury service. Pity you can't just pass it on. When I was younger I would go and sit in the public gallery and just sit and listen. Great free way to spend an afternoon!

I was called up many years ago now I got myself in a bit of a state over it to be honest (was just 18 at the time) I ended up with a doctors letter which I thought would excuse me but I got called again a year later, hated every minute of it to be honest so I understand where you are coming from, lets hope they may forget to call you again

I've done it once about 10 years ago - enjoyed it except when my fellow jurors persuaded me to be the chairman and then told me that when they send a defendant down its the chairman of the jury they remember

About 40 years back, I was summoned and it would have been during the final exams for my first degree, so I asked for a deferrment. I'm still waiting for the new date! Will they summon me before I hit 70?

I've been called 3 times, the last of which was to the Old Bailey on the day the Yorkshire Ripper jury was chosen.
It was the day of my final exams so I couldn't go.
The other two occasions were the most boring times ever. 2 weeks of shlepping down to the courthouse.. sitting in a waiting room from 9am to 2.30 only to be told I wasn't needed that day.
I got to sit on one trial that lasted 2 hours.. in 2 weeks.
