ipad 2 help Please - going mad here.

Hi all.

I am pulling my hair out here. My lovely new ipad 2 (my christmas gift from hubby) was designed to help my business. So far it has been great except for the fact that I am struggling to transfer photos from lap top to the ipad. I bought a card reader attachment from ebay which does not work. They are happy to refund but that does not help my situtation. If i connect the ipad to the laptop and go through itunes it takes forever to download.

Can anyone with an ipad please tell me what they do?

Also noticed that the cf card readers available seem to not work on the ipads with the latest software updates (according to some forums i looked at).

  I've only seen a SD / SDHC download adaptor for the iPad.  It plugs in and allows you to import the pics.  The 2nd adaptor in the kit allows you to pull the images from the camera using a USB lead.

  I use the SD adaptor, and iTunes to sync the pics.  Sync'ing is a lot slower.

If the rest of your system is also Mac, then use Photo Stream.

I've just found some stuff on a HK based company which explains that there was an update in the chip set used by apple which then needed an update on these CF adaptors.  The change was in October, so its possible you got one of the earlier units, depending on when the e-bay retailer ordered their units.

Michael - I work from an Acer Laptop with paintshop pro x 3 as my editing package (if that makes any difference) so no Mac here.

Mike - the reader I got was what i would call a pattern part (not apple original) but i did not know that apple did CF card reader. I am not very technology minded so please excuse me if i am being a little thick here. I have seen on some site people mention a cf adapter that slots into the camera connection kit from apple  but it is not from apple.

What I have read is that on the recent software update the power sent to the port you slot the cards reader to has been reduced and this results in the ipad showing the message "this accessory requires too much power" which is what I got from the one I bought from ebay.

  Apple don't do a CF reader, only an SDHC one.

  From the 3rd party supplier site, 'Our card reader uses only the original Apple Reader Chip from Japan but Apple has recently upgraded their chip to support iOS 5, which means that the older chips from Apple doesn't work with iOS 5'.   

  I've updated my iPad2 to 5.0.1 and I don't have any problems with the SD card reader.

so is it best if i down load from laptop to sd card instead of cf card my camera takes then load on to ipad?

You would think it would make sense for apple to make a cf card reader considering the many pro photographers who use ipads.

going to see if i can get it to work that way.

  I'm a Canon man, so both of mine take CF (and one takes SDHC as well).  One way I do it is to use the SD to CF adaptors to use SDHC cards in the camera, which I can directly upload into the iPad.

  I don't think Apple directly design for the Pro Tog market.  They are looking to the maximum consumer market with thier products - hence the USB / SD adaptor, it's the 3rd parties who come up with the extra products which appeal to the niche market, however, they then are stuck with problems such as you encountered when apple change the chipset.

iPad is not designed to work with raw files so it is only for display really.

I use Pro Photo Manager and transfer everything wirelessly as I need it. I also use photo folder app and transfer the same way using FTP from my PC.

I use RAW files on mine all the time use the camera connection kit and edit with Snapseed, which I think is free today. Since Lion I use photostream to push images to all my iOS devices

Mine will load the RAW files onto it and display them, but I don't use it to edit, just to have a quick look if I'm away and don't have my machine to hand,

Sorry, I was not clear enough. I know raw will go on them. I have read David Zeizer saying how he does it. I do not believe that the iPad was designed for regular use of raw. Temporary use, yes. But if they expected photographers to be holding more than portfolios on there the storage would be bigger. I have the 16gb one. I am typing this on it. I store loads of jpg files to show images. But It would rapidly fill if I shot and kept the images on it.

That was all I meant. If you want to put raw on it, go for it. I'll stick with jpg only.

Hi all and Happy New Year.

The situation took an interesting turn when I decided to just upload more images via iTunes and found my iPad would not connect to the laptop. Changed the cable just in case but still no joy. Great!  so off to currys I went. They were really helpful. I was tempted to pay extra and get the 3G version but it was out of stock and they did not know when it would next be in.  Not very patient so took a new 32G Wifi. Also decided to buy an original apple camera connection kit and an SD card. Came home loaded all the backup then copied some files to the SD card and connected it to the new iPad.................and nothing! 

I think monday I am going to call apple. Maybe like mike said it could be to do with the chip.

I cannot believe what a pain it has been. 

Mark - I totally agree with you. I rarely shoot raw (I know many would say I should) but all I really wanted it for was to display images easily and effectively when out and about for clients and also to transfer images from camera when covering the two day events.

Hi Maria,

Does you new iPad connect to iTunes? Can you transfer other things to the iPad via iTunes, apps, movies, music, etc

If this all works you should be able to sync photos. Select the Photos tab when the iPad is attached and in the "Sync photos from" select the required folder. Then click Apply. That "should" be all there is to it.

I use portfollio, which has an uploader for the computer, you then upload all th eimages in a folder to the app. simples.

or just use iTunes.
